Helpful tips for the beginner to keep in mind....

Learn slipcovering basics on furniture with simple, clean, easy lines.

Relax!! Slipcovers do not have to look like upholstery. You can have excellent results by just keeping the fit simple and relaxed.

For your first slipcover projects select a medium weight cotton fabric with a non directional / all over print. Stay away from upholstery fabrics, large motifs, solids, fabrics with sheens and any thing that should be matched. Wash your cotton fabric a couple times to preshrink it before you make your slipcover. All over prints will be your friend in that they will help hide any imperfections which the beginner is sure to have.

Find a large cutting surface such as a dining room table, pingpong table, supported plywood, or the floor to help you in construction of your project. Remember, the beginning student will learn volumes on their first slipcover so consider using an inexpensive closeout fabric for your first project. Most students cant wait to make a second and third slipcover once they grasp concepts and think of new ideas!

Don't tell your friends that you know how to make slipcovers. Your phone will be ringing off the hook!

Watch the videos several times. It is even helpful to watch the pattern making demonstrations on a fast forward setting.

Do not fear your sewing machine!! This is NOT advanced sewing and you can make wonderful slipcovers without using any dress making details!

Remember that you are the architect when it comes to placing your seam lines. There is really no one way to do this. If you don't like something, simply rethink and alter your pattern as you are making it. That's just one reason why a pattern method approach is so good for beginners!

Stay with your project until completion. You will be amazed how forgiving slipcovers can be!!

The satisfaction you will get from your efforts will naturally encourage and inspire you to make additional covers!!
